OAL to offer two art scholarships

Posted

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Art League announced the creation of two new scholarships for local students who are following their artistic passions. Each scholarship will be $1,000 paid out in $250 increments for each of four years to a senior this year who is planning on majoring in an artistic field in college or art school.

The first is the Ruby Jovanovich Scholarship. Ruby was a founding member of the Ottawa Art League and its first president in 1968. Ruby passed away in 2002 and left 46 unsold paintings. Her family donated those to the OAL and they have been sold to fund a scholarship. OAL members donated material and time to update the paintings for sale. Thanks are due to Music Suite 408’s art gallery and all the people who purchased the paintings.

The second is the Mary Ellen Davies Scholarship. Mary Ellen was a long time member of the Ottawa Art League and her family and friends donated money in her memory to help young artists. For many years the OAL has used this money to present artists with awards at the Annual Youth Art Show. Since that show will not be held in the future, the OAL will offer a scholarship instead.

Scholarship applications can be downloaded from the OAL website, ottawaartleague .org or emailing the league at ottawaartleague@yahoo.com for a copy. Entry deadline is May 15, 2018. The winners will be announced May 25.
