Trojans blanked by Sterling, nip Erie-Prophetstown

Posted

Mendota’s bats were held in check in a 4-0 loss to Sterling on May 1 at the MHS field.

The Trojans managed only three hits off of Sterling hurler Drew Nettleton, who went the distance and struck out 10.

The game was scoreless through four innings before the Golden Warriors broke through with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth off of Mendota starter Izaiah Nanez.

Sterling added single tallies in the sixth and seventh frames.

Mendota’s hits belonged to Justin Randolph (double), Cale Strouss (single) and Nanez (single).

Nanez worked into the seventh inning before Owen Aughenbaugh came on in relief. Nanez permitted six hits, walked three and struck out 11. All of Sterling’s safeties were singles.

The Trojans edged Erie-Prophetstown, 2-1, on May 3 at the MHS field.

E-P scored what turned out to be its lone run in the top of the first on a bases loaded walk. Trojan starting pitcher Dane Doyle managed to wiggle out of the jam when he induced an inning-ending double play.

The scored remained that way until the bottom of the fourth when Mendota tied the game. Randolph led off with a double and Nanez dropped in another double, moving Randolph to third. Braiden Freeman grounded out to plate the tying run.

The Trojans went up top in the sixth, when after the first two batters were retired, Freeman reached on a double infield error. He stole third and scampered home on a line drive single to center by Josh Figueroa.

Doyle wrapped up the complete game victory, allowing three hits, walking three and striking out eight, as the Trojans improved their record to 8-7.

Nanez (two doubles) and Strouss (two singles) paced Mendota’s six-hit attack.
