SUBLETTE — Two Sublette residents were named Outstanding Citizen of the Year for 2021 by the Sublette Village Board.

Nick Wilson and Curtis Kessel were honored as Sublette’ Outstanding Citizen of the Year for 2021 during the May 10 Village of Sublette board meeting. They were each presented with a plaque to take home, and their names were placed on the Citizen of the Year plaque that will hang in the Ellice Dinges Center.

On Sunday, March 14, the Sublette Fire Department got a call for a dumpster fire at Woodhaven Lakes. While en route to the campground, the department received a call of a house fire with a burn victim in Sublette. Prior to arrival of the first engine company, Sublette residents and neighbors, Kessel and Wilson, saw a young child in a window on the second story of the house. As they approached the house, the father was exiting the residence with another child so Kessel and Wilson jumped into action. Kessel scaled the back fence and climbed to the second story window, grabbed the child by the ankle and lowered the child down to Wilson, saving the child’s life before the window was enveloped in smoke and flames.

Theresa Wilson honored

Sublette Treasurer Theresa Wilson, pictured below, was honored for her 40 years of service to the Village of Sublette. This was Wilson’s last board meeting as treasurer. Wilson was first elected to the position of village clerk in 1981, which began her 40 years of service to the village.

New trustee

Sublette Village President John Stenzel appointed Mackenzie Belan to fill the remaining two years left on his village trustee term. Stenzel was elected to the position of Sublette Village President on April 6. The appointment was approved by the village trustees. Belan had tied with Sublette Village Trustee Larry Ellis in the April election, leading to a tie-breaker held at the county. Ellis was the winner of the tie-breaker and began serving on the board on April 29. Belan served previously in the role of Sublette Village Clerk.

New Treasurer

The board approved the appointment of Will Klein for a one-year term as village treasurer. He was sworn in during the meeting.

In other board news:

• Don Dinges reported that the village is planning some upcoming events, but nothing is set in stone. Included in the upcoming events are: Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 31; Annual tractor drive on the first Wednesday of August; Sublette Business Association planned weekend with village-wide garage sales; Cruise Night with date to be determined; and Car Show, which will be held after Labor Day.
• Stenzel reported that the Route 52 resurfacing has been let by the state and work would probably start in the middle of June.
• The board agreed to start accepting rentals for the Ellice Dinges Center.
• The board held a special meeting on May 17 to open bids for street projects, discuss window replacement at the Ellice Dinges Center, discuss the Village of Sublette message board placement, and discuss ordinance violations for properties and vehicles.

The next Sublette Village Board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 14 at the Ellice Dinges Center.
