SPRINGFIELD - Sister Mary Dominic Joerger, OP is being recognized for 75 years of service by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield. A Mendota native, Sister Mary Dominic was a member of Holy Cross Parish in Mendota before professing her vows on June 13, 1945 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
After earning a Bachelor’s degree in education from DePaul University and a K-12 Teaching and Supervision Certificate, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Illinois.
During her working years, Sister Mary Dominic was an educator serving at schools in Illinois and Minnesota and was a parish volunteer in Springfield. While working in the Diocese of Peoria, she returned to her hometown for one year (1968-1969) and taught fifth grade at Holy Cross School in Mendota.
A private celebration with the Dominican Sisters is planned for Aug. 8.
