MENDOTA – A new alderman was appointed and another step forward was taken in the Illinois Avenue project during items handled at the regular meeting of the Mendota City Council on March 16.
Mayor David Boelk began the meeting by appointing Vicki Johnson as the new alderman in the Fourth Ward to replace Bill Hunt, who resigned in February. Johnson, who is a former teacher and administrator in the Mendota elementary school system, will fill out the remainder of the term. The seat will be up for election in April 2021.
ALDERMANIC REPORTS
In aldermanic reports, Mark Peasley offered an informational item that the possible construction of one or more dog parks in the city will be discussed at a future meeting.
Alderman Jay Miller presented a request by Road Ranger for a video gaming license to add a gaming machine at its location. The council approved the request.
During alderman Kyle Kim’s report, the council approved a new contract with Mendota Fire Department Local 4200.
Also, the council agreed to an ordinance authorizing the mayor to declare a state of emergency should the need arise and authorizing contracts as necessary to resolve a state of emergency.
Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick presented several items during his report. The council agreed to a request from the Mendota Museum & Historical Society to close a portion of Eighth Street for Railroad Crossing & Country Fair Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 20.
Fitzpatrick presented the bid sheet for the Illinois Avenue Streetscape and miscellaneous street and alley improvements. Four bids were submitted and Universal Asphalt of LaSalle had the lowest bid at $497,057, which was accepted by the council. In addition to new street and sidewalk construction, other items in the bid package included stamped colored concrete, decorative park benches, decorative trash receptacles and a gateway arched sign.
The council also acted on bids for the 2020 motor fuel tax hot mix asphalt resurfacing project and Universal Asphalt also won that bid at $300,599 over three other companies.
The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m.
