MENDOTA - Herbert J. Daw, 95, of Mendota died Jan. 27, 2018 at Prairie Crossing Living and Rehab, Shabbona
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1 at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota with Rev. Mark Glenn officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota with military rites by Mendota VFW Post 4079. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the funeral home.
Herb was born Jan. 6, 1923 in West Brooklyn to Orley N. and Ruby (Maves) Daw. He married Julia D. Fitzgerald on May 11, 1941 at Holy Cross Church, Mendota. She preceded him in death on Nov. 14, 2015.
Survivors include two sons, Steven “Herbie” (Kelly) Daw of Mendota and John Michael (Cheryl) Daw of Springfield, Mo.; two daughters, Linda Ann (Michael) Zinke of West Brooklyn and Constance Sue (Dennis) Arjes of Oregon; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Clarence, Bruce and Orley; a half sister, Mabel Irene Daw in infancy; and a half brother, Edwin Daw.
Herb served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the African-European area of operations and received two bronze stars. He was a member of Mendota VFW Post 4079. He was employed by Frost Construction, Mendota and then by the City of Mendota in their water and street departments before his retirement in 1988. He had a ringside seat for Mendota High School Friday night football at Doenier Field. He was an outstanding cook.
