LA SALLE – The members of Fort du Rocher chapter of National Daughters of the American Revolution recently spent their Day of Service at the Veterans Home in LaSalle.
Since the COVID-19 shutdown does not allow visiting inside the facility, the DAR members took on a project to beautify the grounds. After a general clean-up was accomplished, nine new flowering bushes were planted, which will bloom from spring through fall. The bushes are visible to residents from their windows.
The Day of Service is a national occurrence where all NSDAR chapters determine what they are able to do to better serve their local communities. The state regent, Sharla Luken, has chosen her project during her term in office as “Serving Those Who Have Served Us” so the local chapter’s selection of a project at the Veterans Home was to follow her lead.
Nine volunteers took part in the plantings. Two spouses, two adult sons and five members worked diligently to accomplish the project. Fort du Rocher’s plan is to continue in the spring with phase two at the Veterans Home.
DAR membership is open to any woman over the age of 18 who can prove lineage to a Revolutionary War patriot. Lineage assistance is available. For more information, contact Linda Sigmon Byrd at (815) 538-4166.
