The answer to last week’s quiz is: Handshakes are seen in art from ancient times but they were not commonplace and had several meanings. In more recent times, some historians believe handshakes were popularized by 17th century Quakers who saw this type of greeting as more egalitarian than bowing or hat tipping. Over time handshakes were more frequently used and by the 1800s, etiquette manuals often included guidelines for proper handshaking technique.
