MENDOTA - The Gardening Club of Mendota recently planted 5,000 daffodil bulbs that included a mixture of four different varieties in the flowering beds on Illinois Avenue in downtown Mendota. The bulbs will bloom in four sequences from early to late spring. Also, 100 allium bulbs were planted, which will be a purple flower that blooms just after the daffodils are done. Total shipping weight of the bulbs was 800 pounds. The city of Mendota split the cost of the bulbs with the Gardening Club. Other plantings included a variety of perennial flowers to add interest throughout the year. The 10 flower beds will be topped off with wood chips this fall. Steve Lauer of the Gardening Club said the 5,000 daffodils are dedicated to long-time Gardening Club member and former president Jim Armstrong, who recently passed away. The Gardening Club is always looking for new members. Anyone interested in joining the club can contact Lauer at (815) 343-7364 or see the club’s Facebook page. (Photo contributed)
