BUREAU COUNTY - Eighteen years ago the Bureau County Tourism committee and Henry County tourism came up with an idea to bring tourism travel to their towns. This event – called More on 34 – soon grew into a 100-mile long route of garage sales, bake sales and flea markets. But last year the event was cancelled due to COVID and this year, Henry county has chosen not to promote or participate.
To keep this event going in 2021 and offer even more fun for Bureau County bargain hunters, it will be open to all communities in Bureau County, not just on Route 34. The new event is being called “More in Bureau County” and is open to everyone in the county. Get your neighbors together and plan some sales. Now is the time to get rid of that stuff you have been saving. Organizers would love to see each community in Bureau County that has not had a town wide garage sale in the past schedule it this weekend.
Garage sales will be held on Friday and Saturday of Father’s Day weekend, June 18 and 19. Some may even open on Thursday for early bird shoppers. A list of garage sales will be posted on the More on 34-Bureau County Facebook page and on the Bureau County Tourism web page. To list your sale, send an e-mail to kathybctourism@yahoo.com or share to the Facebook page with your complete address (if it’s rural, try to list some directions), a list of a few items you will have for sale, and your sale hours and days.
Many people have cleaned out closets during quarantine so this will be an ideal time to have a garage sale. Please be mindful of current health department guidelines when hosting or attending a sale – wear your mask, wash your hands often and keep a social distance from other shoppers.
Bureau County Fairgrounds will host a Barn Sale during More in Bureau County and offer spots for sellers but it will be different than the past. Since exhibit halls at the fairgrounds are being used for COVID vaccinations, there will be a new location on the northwest side of the fairgrounds. This building has a concrete floor and roof with chain link outside walls for plenty of fresh air. Spaces will be spread according to social distancing rules. Sale hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Outdoor spaces will also be available.
