MENDOTA – The city of Mendota is gearing up for an electronics recycling day later this month, it was announced at the April 3 regular meeting of the Mendota City Council.

The recycling day will be held at the Mendota Civic Center from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 22, which happens to be Earth Day. Since the event is not limited to just Mendota residents and the drop-off of all eligible items is free, the city is anticipating a large turnout.

Because of that, the city is designating a specific route for vehicles to enter and exit the Civic Center parking lot. Vehicles must approach the area from 14th Avenue off of Meriden Street. Turn off of 14th Avenue onto Lakewood Plaza Drive, which then turns into Tom Merwin Drive on the east side of Lake Mendota and continue to the Civic Center parking lot. Vehicles will then exit the parking lot on the west side of the Civic Center and come out on U.S. 52 by Phalen Steel Construction.

Entrances to the lake area will be barricaded at Subway and south of New Covenant Assembly Church. That is also the first day of the Mendota Area Youth Soccer League season, so participants should allow extra time to get to and from the fields. A suggestion is to park on the south side of the lake.

In other items, Mayor David Boelk announced that the electric aggregation bid results will be announced at the next council meeting.

Alderman Bill Hunt said preliminary discussion has taken place in regard to alternative ambulance transfer options for the city. Hunt said the city is looking into enhancing the service that already exists.

Alderman Walt Weiland reminded residents that with the start of the lawn-mowing season, grass clippings are not to be blown into the street and left there without cleaning them up. If there is a violation of this ordinance, fines could be assessed. Weiland added that the city has spent a lot of money over the years in upgrading its sewer drainage system and it would like to reap the rewards of that investment.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m.
