Two new officers join Mendota Police Dept.

MENDOTA – The swearing in of two police officers was among the items handled by the Mendota City Council at its regular meeting on March 2.

Abram Yucus took the oath of office to join the Mendota Police Department as a full-time officer. He will have several months of training before beginning his duties with the department. Yucus is a native of the Ohio, Ill., area and graduated from the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.

Clint Thulen was sworn in as a part-time officer. He will be appointed to the TRIDENT Drug Task Force assigned to the drug interdiction team concentrating on the I-80 area in Bureau County. Thulen is a retired Illinois State Trooper having served in that capacity for 27 years.

ALDERMANIC REPORTS

Mayor David Boelk gave the report for alderman Jim Fitzpatrick in his absence. The council approved to dispense of the bidding process for building demolition at 805 Illinois Ave. (former Campbell’s Cleaners) and then approved proceeding with the actual demolition.

Also, the council approved the annual maintenance resolution for the motor fuel tax fund and authorized bid letting for the 2020 street program set for 10 a.m. Monday, March 16.

Alderman John Hessenberger reported on the results of a Feb. 24 meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals in which Beck Oil Company was requesting a height variance for a sign at its I-39 location. Hessenberger said the Zoning Board of Appeals recommended approval and the council voted to allow Beck Oil Co. to erect a 102-foot sign.

Alderman Mark Peasley presented an IDOT resolution for the annual Sweet Corn Festival street closures, which was approved by the council.

In an item from the mayor, April 2, 2020 was proclaimed as Junior Achievement Day in Mendota.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m.
