MENDOTA – Mendota made its first game of the season in Three Rivers Conference play a successful one with a 2-0 triumph over Bureau Valley in varsity baseball action on March 28 at the MHS field.

The Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the first when Cale Strouss led off with a single, stole second and third, and raced home on a throwing error.

Mendota winning pitcher Izaiah Nanez and Bureau Valley’s Logan Philhower fired blanks over the next four innings before the Trojans added an insurance run in the sixth. Dane Doyle reached base on another Storm throwing error and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly to deep center by Nanez.

Nanez went the distance on the hill for Mendota, allowing just two hits, no walks and striking out nine. The senior right-hander threw only 71 pitches over seven innings, 52 of which were strikes. His only real trouble came in the fourth when Bureau Valley had runners at second and third with two outs, but Nanez got a called third strike to end the threat.

The Trojans finished with three singles, two off the bat of Strouss. Braiden Freeman had the other safety.
