Trojan golfers open season with two conference wins

The Mendota High School golf teams took to the course for the first time this season at Winnebago on Aug. 17.

In varsity competition, the Trojans downed the hosts by three strokes, 171-174.

Ethan Hanaman led the way for Mendota with a team-low score of 41. Jack Beetz and Logan Brandner checked in next with 42s, followed by Liam McGann with a 46, Mateo Escatel with a 49 and Clayton Buffington with a 53.

Bryson Walz of Winnebago was the medalist with a 39.

Winnebago claimed the junior varsity match, 186-212.

Kody Becket turned in the low score for the Trojans with a 48, one stroke better than teammate Dominik Stamberger. Also competing for Mendota were Drake Dennis (56), Owen Aughenbaugh (59), Jack Mikolasek (60) and Cale Strouss (63).

Mendota played on its home course for the first time this season and pulled out a 177-182 victory over Stillman Valley on Aug. 20.

Zeke Hessenberger and Hanaman were a solid one-two punch for the Trojans, shooting 39 and 40, respectively. Hessenberger’s score earned him meet medalist honors. Beetz fired a round of 47, followed by Brandner and McGann both at 51, and Buffington with a 55.

“We struggled as a team, but good rounds by Zeke and Ethan saved us,” said first-year head coach David Ross.

Stillman Valley avoided the sweep by defeated Mendota in the junior varsity match, 187-208.

Escatel and Aughenbaugh paced the Trojans, each with a round of 48. Also competing for Mendota were Dennis (52), Becket (60), Stamberger (63) and Strouss (64).
