SPRING VALLEY – The Mendota sophomore boys’ basketball team lost all three of its games played in the Colmone Classic at Spring Valley.
The Trojans opened up with a 50-24 setback to LaSalle-Peru. Mendota fell behind 12-5 after the opening quarter and then was outscored, 14-3, in the second period to trail by a 26-8 count at halftime.
Jace Baird’s eight points led the way for the Trojans, followed by Owen Aughenbaugh with five, and Logan Dewey and Cale Strouss with four apiece.
Another slow start doomed the Trojans in a 47-25 defeat to Fieldcrest in the second round of the tournament. Fieldcrest jumped out to a 16-4 advantage after the first stanza and took a 27-10 lead to intermission.
Aughenbaugh topped the scoring chart for Mendota with eight points. Strouss was next with five tallies, while Baird and Mason Koch each had four markers.
Mendota wrapped up tournament play with a 42-23 loss to Pontiac. The Trojans held a 10-8 lead at the end of the first eight-minute session, but they went cold in the second quarter and scored only two points compared to 13 for Pontiac. Mendota crept back to within five (23-18) heading to the fourth frame, but Pontiac pumped in 19 points in the final period and the Trojans managed only five.
Strouss hit double-digits for Mendota with 11 points and Domenic Richey provided five tallies.
Mendota’s season record is 2-4.
