STERLING – Newman burned up the nets with its hot shooting the first time it played the Mendota girls in December, and the Lady Comets did it again the second time around.
Newman raced out to a huge first-quarter lead and never looked back enroute to a 65-18 victory over the Lady Trojans in a Three Rivers Conference varsity girls’ basketball game on Jan. 23 at Sterling.
The Lady Comets built a 20-7 lead after the opening stanza, and then knocked down six three-pointers in the second quarter on their way to a 30-point outburst to seize a 50-13 halftime advantage. Newman outscored Mendota, 15-5, in the third period, and then neither team scored in the fourth.
“We 100 percent could’ve played better at both ends, but honestly, I thought we got outshot by a better team that shot the lights out,” said Mendota coach John Hansen.
Kennedy Knaff’s seven points paced Mendota, while Ava Eddy added four markers. Ella Coss and Crystal Garcia each had four rebounds.
Newman had 26 field goals, nine of which came from three-point range. Brooklyn Smith dropped in five of Newman’s treys, including four in its 30-point second quarter.
