ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Mendota’s state qualifying tennis doubles team posted a 2-2 record at the IHSA Class 1A State Tennis Tournament on June 10. The matches were played on various courts around Arlington Heights. Hersey High School served as tournament central.
The MHS duo of Logan Brandner and Andrew Stamberger opened up tournament play with a 6-1. 6-0 loss to Sam Cutinho and Antonio Feliciano of Chicago Latin.
Brandner-Stamberger bouned back to take down Josh Ramage and Pierce Farmer of Mattoon in the consolation bracket 6-4, 6-4, and then the Mendota team won by default over Daniel Han and Freddie Tang of Chicago University.
In the third round of the consolation bracket, Brandner-Stamberger lost to Johnny Yavari and Joseph Hargrave of Elgin Academy, 6-3, 6-1, eliminating them from the tournament.
Shawn LeRette, MHS head coach, said this is only the second time in Mendota High School history that a doubles tennis team has won two matches at the state tournament. Both players just completed their junior year at MHS.
