MENDOTA - Mendota VFW Post 4079 is pleased to announce its winners for the 2020 Patriot’s Pen Essay competition.
This year’s winners are all 8th graders. They include:
1st Place: Quin Holland, Northbrook School
2nd Place: Kenley Wilson, Holy Cross School
3rd Place: Kirby Bond, Holy Cross School

These winners were presented with a certificate and an award prize of $75, $50 and $25 respectively.
All three of the winning essays were forwarded to District 9 for the next level of competition, in which they compete against all other post winners within the district. At the district level, Quin Holland’s essay received 2nd place and he was presented an award certificate and a $75 award prize from the district. The 1st place district-level winner was from Chillicothe and 3rd place was from Bartonville.
Sixth, 7th and 8th grade students in Mendota and the surrounding area schools were invited to participate. The Patriot’s Pen annual theme this year was, “What is Patriotism To Me” and is acclaimed as a way for students to present their ideas, demonstrate their patriotism and receive awards for their effort.
