MENDOTA - The American Red Cross held a very successful blood drive at the Mendota Moose Family Center on April 7. The goal for the day of 65 was far surpassed with 79 good units collected. This included 60 whole blood donations and 19 double red cell donations.
Reaching donation milestones were Ronald Henkel, who hit the 16-gallon mark, and Cheryl Bird who reached six gallons.
There were also several first-time donors including Amy Kofoed, Michael Riley, Lori Smith, Steven Schoeph, Marie Barnickel, Christina Barnickel, Erin McCoy, Jennifer Pappas, Sean Pappas and Madison Pappas. (Apologies if anyone was inadvertently omitted.)
To help keep donors and volunteers safe, Red Cross employees wore masks and gloves and took donors’ temperatures before they registered. No walk ins were allowed, so the number of people waiting to donate was down. In addition, the chairs and beds were adequately spaced apart to maintain safe social distancing.
Local volunteers who helped the day run smoothly included Sandy Schroeder, Peg Mathesius-Cerveny, Kristi Carroll and Lori Simonton. Mendota Subway again donated sandwiches for the donor luncheon and Black Bros. donated sandwiches and chips to the drive.
“We had a great turnout, considering these uncertain times,” Simonton said. “Your time and donation are greatly appreciated.”
The next bloodmobile will be held on Tuesday, June 2 at the Mendota Moose Family Center. Anyone who would like to make an appointment or who has questions, please call Lori at (815) 866-3582.
