History Fair projects to be featured at Hume-Carnegie Museum opening March 7

MENDOTA - Holy Cross School seventh graders recently partnered with Hume-Carnegie Museum staff to do research on local history for their History Fair projects. The resulting projects will the featured display at the Museum when it opens for the 2020 season at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7.

The Holy Cross students chose topics that focused on various aspects of local history and learned about some of the inspiring people who not only helped the area grow but also enriched the community through their generosity, talent and hard work. The museum staff was pleased to work with the students helping them research and discover details about some of the people, places and events that helped shape Mendota and the surrounding area.

The Holy Cross students’ projects include The Kitch-Inn, August Holland, Helen Hokinson, Horace Hume, Willard Graves, Hegeler Carus Mansion, Cherry Coal Mine, Ken Gehler, the Cooke Family and Carson Pirie Scott & Co. These projects will be on display through mid-April. The Museum is proud of all the students and their accomplishments and they invite everyone to stop by to see the History Fair projects along with all of the other unique, historical items on display at the Museum.

The volunteers at the Union Depot Railroad Museum have also been busy updating several of their displays. The public is welcome to come and visit the Railroad Museum and see their most recent improvements as well.

The Hume-Carnegie Museum will be open this season on Saturdays and Sundays from 1–4 p.m. The Union Depot Railroad Museum’s hours will be from noon–4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The Museums’ 2020 season will run from March 7 to mid-December.
