MENDOTA – The Mendota Lady Trojans ended the basketball season on a winning note with a 41-14 triumph over North Boone in the final game of the Big Northern Conference Tournament on March 9 at the MHS gym.
The Lady Trojans, who finished up at 4-10, posted three of their four victories over North Boone.
Mendota took charge from the opening tip as they pumped in five three-pointers in the opening stanza to zoom out to a 19-5 lead. The margin increased to 29-6 at the half.
Jenna O’Donnell connected on three of the treys in the first period on her way to a game-high 13-point performance. Daisy Arteaga added the other two trifectas in the first and ended the night with 10 tallies.
“We started out hot to jump to a 10-0 start and never looked back,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “We had a really solid game on defense and moved the ball well. It was a nice way to end this crazy season.”
Mendota increased the advantage to more than 30 points in the third quarter, which kicked in the running clock the rest of the way. The count was 39-7 heading to the fourth.
Freshman Reanna Brant chipped in with eight points and tied Izabella Nanez for the team lead in rebounds with nine apiece. Jaelyn Fitzgerald picked off seven boards, while Nanez provided four steals, and O’Donnell supplied four assists and three steals.
Winnebago captured the conference tournament title with a 48-40 come-from-behind victory over Rock Falls. Other final-round games: 3rd place - Byron 38, Dixon 33; 5th place - Stillman Valley 45, Rockford Lutheran 36; 7th place - Rockford Christian 52, Genoa-Kingston 32.
