MENDOTA – The Mendota City Council approved a project bid and was introduced to a new police officer at its Jan. 2 regular meeting.

Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick said only one bid was submitted for the construction of new restrooms at Blackstone Park and Lake Mendota Park near the west shelter. Huffcutt Concrete of Chippewa Falls, Wis., was awarded the bid in the amount of $125,625 for each restroom facility. Construction will likely begin in the spring and the existing restrooms will be demolished.

Also from Fitzpatrick’s report, he announced that the city will pick up Christmas trees through Jan. 31. Trees to be picked up should be placed at the curb, not in the street.

During Alderman John Hessenberger’s report, the council approved an ordinance acquiring 0.94 acres of Betz property located west of Route 251 just past the south railroad viaduct.

Alderman Kyle Kim’s report included the introduction of a new officer for the Mendota Police Department. Matthew Kristensen was given the oath of office by Dave McNally, chairman of the Police & Fire Commission. He is a native of Oglesby and a graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School. Kristensen will undergo 16 weeks of law enforcement training at the Sauk Valley Police Academy in Dixon, followed by 12 weeks of field training with the Mendota Police Department.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, Jan, 15 at 5:30 p.m.
