MENDOTA – The Mendota varsity softball team began the Three Rivers Conference season with a 17-5 loss to Bureau Valley on March 28 at the MHS field. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Bureau Valley got on the board first, sending 11 batters to the plate in the second inning and scoring seven runs.

Mendota cut into the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the second. After the first two batters were retired, Sydney Tolley walked, Peri Manning reached on an error and Lily Bokus singled. Ava Eddy followed with a triple to clear the bases.

The Storm got those three runs back in the top of the third and then batted around again in the fourth to plate seven more runs to take a 17-3 lead.

The Lady Trojans (0-3) added single runs in the fourth and fifth frames. In the fourth, Ella Coss doubled, Tolley singled and Manning drove in Coss with a ground out. In the fifth, Kate Strouss led off with a single and came home on a grounder by Madelyn Becker.

Eddy (double, triple) and Strouss (two singles) combined for four of Mendota’s seven hits.

Eddy was the losing pitcher.
