The Mendota Trojans scored in every inning and took down Oregon, 16-9, in the opening round of the Class 2A Regional on June 2 at the MHS diamond.

After Mendota took a quick 2-0 lead in the first, Oregon responded with three runs in the top of the second without the benefit of a hit. But the Trojans didn’t trail for long as they answered with a four-spot in the bottom of the second highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Ted Landgraf.

Each team plated two runs in their half of the third inning, while Oregon added two more runs in the fifth and sixth frames. But it wasn’t enough to overtake the Trojans, who tallied one in the fourth, two in fifth and then put the game away with a big five-run sixth.

In the deciding sixth, Krew Bond lifted his second sacrifice fly of the game to get the first run of the inning home, and then later, Andres Castaneda supplied an inside-the-park grand slam home run to deep right-center field to stake the Trojans to a 16-9 lead.

Castaneda also had a triple in the contest to deliver two of Mendota’s 11 hits. He drove in six runs. Dominik Stamberger banged out two singles, a double and drove in a run, while Abel Guerra picked up two singles and an RBI. Landgraf finished with three runs batted in.

Bond got the call on the hill for Mendota and worked into the third. He did not allow a hit and only one of the five runs off of him was earned. He walked five and struck out seven. Stamberger went the rest of the way to pick up the win. He permitted five hits, two earned runs, walked two and fanned five.

The Trojans saw their season come to a close after a 15-0 four-inning loss at Princeton in the regional semifinals on June 4.

Princeton pitcher Danny Cihocki did not allow a hit over the four-inning contest. He walked four and struck out seven.

The Tigers scored in every inning, including a six-run first.

Sean Figueroa was the starting pitcher for Mendota. He gave up five hits and 10 runs, but only one of the runs was earned as the Trojan defense committed five errors. Landon Kreiser finished up on the hill.

Mendota ended the season with a 3-11 record.
