MENDOTA – Preparations by the candidates are winding down as the Queen Pageant for the 75th annual Sweet Corn Festival is fast approaching. Ten young ladies will participate in this year’s pageant set for Friday, Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m. on the First State stage on U.S. 34 in downtown Mendota.
All of the candidates will be receiving Mendota Gift Certificates. The certificates are gifts from Mendota Chamber member businesses who are participating in the Mendota SCF Queen Gift Certificate Program. The gift certificates are redeemable for goods and merchandise in participants businesses. The Chamber would like to thank those members who have participated.
Here are the final two contestants who will be vying to wear the crown as the 2022 Sweet Corn Queen.
Paige Manning is being sponsored by the Women of the Moose in this year’s pageant. She is the daughter of Steve and Valerie Manning of Mendota. She stands five feet, seven inches tall with blond hair and blue eyes.
Manning is a 2022 graduate of Mendota High School. While in high school, she was very active in softball, basketball and volleyball all four years. She was also the captain of all three sports her senior year. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society and was also on the math team and academic team. Manning was also an Illinois State Scholar and all-conference athlete and all- conference academic. She also received the Lions Club 4.0 award.
In the fall, Manning plans on attending the University of Dubuque where she will continue to play softball. She plans on getting her bachelor’s degree in Biology, with a goal of being a Physician’s Assistant in orthopedics and sports medicine. She is very interested in science, sports and how those two can work together. She just wants to treat athletes so they can get back to playing the sport they love.
This summer you will find Manning either working at the Mendota Swimming Pool as a life guard or playing a lot of travel softball. She will be teaching kids swim lessons and making sure they stay safe in the pool. She also loves to hang out with friends, walk her dog and teach younger kids how to play softball.
The Mendota Fire Department has selected Kendra Frey as its queen candidate. She is the daughter of Kent Frey and Tammy Sterling. She is five feet, five inches tall with blue eyes and blond hair.
Frey is a 2022 graduate of Mendota High School where she was a football and basketball cheerleader.
In the fall, she plans to attend IVCC to major in Business.
This summer, Frey will be enjoying time with her friends and family. She is also be working as a waitress. She enjoys doing photography and weightlifting. She hopes to get some traveling in before one day starting a family.
