MENDOTA - Vi Swisher, 98, of Mendota passed away Oct. 17, 2017 at the Mendota Lutheran Home.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mendota with Rev. Duane Jack officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Schwarz Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Adam, Bob and Nick Swisher, Chris and Gary Becket, and Ed Vincent.
Vi was born April 3, 1919 in State Center, Iowa to Walter and Carrie (Inglis) Fry. She married Robert C. Swisher at Holy Cross Church in Mendota on Feb. 18, 1939. He preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1996.
Survivors include two sons, William (Andrea) Swisher of Spring Valley and James (Diane) Swisher of West Brooklyn; two daughters, Constance Becket of Henry and June (Scott) Setchell of Mendota; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Judy Thomas of New Lenox.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Robert Swisher II on July 5, 1972; one granddaughter, Rebecca Swisher on May 20, 1983; one brother, Charles “Bud” Fry; and four sisters, Anabel Gehant, Barb Powers, Mary Lou Russ and Florence Vincent.
Vi graduated from Mendota High School in 1937. During her working career, she cooked for the priests at Holy Cross. She was a member of Holy Cross Church and St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society.
