MENDOTA – Mendota claimed third place in the Big Northern Conference Soccer Tournament with a 5-0 shutout over Genoa-Kingston on April 16 at the MHS field.

Yahir Diaz produced most of the offense for the Trojans with three of the team’s five goals. He finished the shortened season with 20 goals and 11 assists. Josue Arteaga and Ricky Orozco scored the other goals in the Trojan win. Arteaga and Johnathan Cortez were credited with assists.

Manny Trejo was between the pipes for Mendota and posted his sixth shutout of the season.

The Trojans finished the season with an 8-2 record.

Rockford Christian avenged an earlier season loss to Mendota by clipping the Trojans, 2-1, in the semifinal-round on April 14 at the MHS field.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a successful penalty kick by Diaz, but that turned out to be the only goal they scored. Rockford Christian tied the game later in the first half, and then tallied the only goal in the second half to earn a trip to the championship game.

The Trojans opened the tournament with a dominant 5-0 win over Byron on April 12 at the MHS field.

Mendota had a majority of the possessions both halves and an overwhelming amount of shots on goal.

Diaz recorded another hat trick, drilling home three goals and also getting an assist. Jasiel Watson and Cortez had the other goals for the Trojans, while Ricky Orozco, Edgar Arteaga and Jose Ruiz each had an assist.

Trejo had another stellar performance in goal with the shutout.
