Trojans still looking for first BNC win

Mendota is still looking for its first conference win after it was defeated by Dixon and North Boone in Big Northern Conference varsity boys’ basketball action.

The Trojans were overwhelmed by the Dukes, 66-16, on Jan. 25 at Dixon.

Dixon took control from the opening tip and led 19-7 after the first quarter. Mendota managed just nine more points the rest of the game. It was down 33-11 at the half and 54-14 after three frames.

Eddie Perez led the Trojans with five points, while Cole Stremlau added four points.


Mendota picked up its offense against North Boone, but faded in the fourth quarter in a 53-41 setback on Jan. 26.

The Trojans held a 26-24 halftime lead and the two teams were tied at 33-33 after three frames, but North Boone pumped in 20 fourth-quarter points compared to eight for Mendota. The Trojans were plagued by turnovers in the fourth quarter when on numerous occasions they gave the ball back to North Boone without ever getting a shot at the basket. Mendota ended with 20 miscues.

Perez led the point column for Mendota with 12, followed by Chris Sandoval with eight and Emiliano Arteaga and Joel Escatel with six apiece. Joel Figueroa topped the team with 11 rebounds, while Sandoval grabbed nine caroms.

The Trojans fell to 3-19 overall and 0-5 in league play.
