JACKSONVILLE – Mendota’s varsity baseball team won one of three games in the Jacksonville Tournament on March 15-16.

The Trojans started off the season with a 4-0 victory over Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond on March 15.

Gavin Glazebrook spun a gem for the Trojans, give up just three hits, striking out nine and walking four in the route-going performance.

Glazebrook also helped himself by scoring two of Mendota’ four runs. The Trojans collected five hits, including two singles and an RBI by Joel Escatel and a two-run single by Austin Robinson.

Day two of the tournament wasn’t as kind to the Trojans as they suffered a pair of losses by the 10-run rule.

Chillicothe IVC picked up a 12-2 triumph over the Trojans in a game halted in the sixth.

IVC scored in all but one inning, capping off the contest with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Mendota scored its only two runs in the top of the third with Joel Escatel singling in one of the runs. Robinson added a double for the Trojans, who finished with five hits.

Mendota sent four pitchers to the mound, starting with Johnnie Gonazalez, who worked the first two innings and took the loss. Noah Garza, Mason DeFore and Breyden Lindenmeyer followed up on the hill.

Princeville dealt the Trojans a 16-6 loss in a five-inning game.

The Princes scored in all five frames, including a seven-spot in the third.

Mendota was blanked over the first two innings, but tallied three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The Trojans managed six singles in the game, with three coming off the bat of Robinson, who drove in a run.

Ted Landgraf was the starting and losing pitcher for Mendota, working into the third before being taken down in favor of Joel Escatel. Andrew Castaneda and Derek Nanez also had turns on the mound.

Princeville had 11 hits, including a pair of inside-the-park home runs by Tyus Hunt.
