Trojans golf teams perform well in Big Northern Conference meets

The Mendota Trojans’ varsity golf team struggled in a dual meet loss to LaSalle-Peru on Sept. 29 at Oak Ridge. L-P fired a 165 and Mendota finished with a 188.

Ethan Hanaman had the low score for the Trojans with a 43. L-P’s Caden Valenzuela was the meet medalist with a 38.

Jack Beetz and Logan Brandner checked in next for Mendota, each with 47s, while Mateo Escatel and Drake Dennis each shot a 51. Also on the card for the Trojans were Liam McGann (58), Kody Becket (59) and Clayton Buffington (60).

L-P also claimed the junior varsity competition, 191-207.

Owen Aughenbaugh’s round of 50 led the Trojans. Xzavior Orozco was one shot off the pace with a 51, followed by Braden McPheeters and Dominik Stamberger both at 53, Cayden Escatel at 55 and Connor Egler with a 58. The rest of the MHS lineup included Jack Mikolasek (61), Jace Baird (67), Sam Christmann (69) and Haden Shakespeare (71).

Mendota competed in the Big Northern Conference varsity meet on Oct. 1 at Poplar Grove. The Trojans finished fourth out of 11 teams with a score of 372. The top three spots went to Byron (345), Rockford Christian (347) and Stillman Valley (351). Coming in behind the Trojans were Winnebago (390), Dixon (394), Genoa-Kingston (400), Rockford Lutheran (400), Oregon (405), North Boone (425) and Rock Falls (431).

Hanaman shot an 89 and finished in 14th place to pace the Trojans. Other scores counting toward Mendota’s total were Buffington with a 91, Beetz with a 94 and Brandner with a 98. Mateo Escatel (109) and Dennis (110) rounded out the MHS card.

MHS’s junior varsity squad finished third out of nine teams in the Big Northern Conference JV Meet on Oct. 3 at Belvidere.

The Trojans ended with a round of 194, with only Rockford Christian (184) and Winnebago (189) finishing in front. The rest of the standings were Byron (206), Stillman Valley (210), North Boone (221), Dixon (224), Oregon (224) and Genoa-Kingston (227).

Aughenbaugh led the charge for Mendota with a round of 43, which was good enough for third place overall. McPheeters and Mikolasek each had a 49, placing 10th overall, while Stamberger carded a 53. Cayden Escatel (54) and Baird (60) also competed for MHS.

Eli Friesen of Rockford Christian and Ethan Longanecker of Winnebago tied for the low round with 41s.
