Trojans fall short in four BNC contests

Genoa-Kingston took command early in the game and cruised to a 66-32 win over the Mendota varsity boys’ basketball team on Feb. 16 at the MHS gym.

The Cogs’ offense was hot from the outset as they raced out to a 19-5 lead after the first session. G-K continued its onslaught in the second period and carried a 37-14 cushion to the locker room.

Krew Bond’s eight points paced the Trojans. Rafa Romero was next with seven markers and Izaiah Nanez provided six tallies.

Rock Falls and Mendota played a tight game through three quarters before the Rockets pulled away in the fourth to post a 48-36 triumph over the Trojans on Feb. 17 at the MHS gym.

Both teams had trouble putting the ball in the basket in the first quarter as it ended with Rock Falls on top, 4-3. The scoring picked up slightly in the second period and the Rockets owned a 14-9 halftime advantage. Each team put 17 points in the board in the third frame, then Rock Falls opened up a double-digit lead in the fourth.

Bond and Romero contributed 10 and nine points, respectively, for Mendota, while Emilio Perez added seven markers.

Winnebago shot the lights out from start to finish and defeated the Trojans, 85-33, on Feb. 19 at Winnebago.

The Indians blitzed Mendota with a 31-point first quarter behind the strength of four three-pointers and led 31-15 after one. The count was 50-28 at the half, and then the Trojans scored just five second-half points compared to 35 for Winnebago.

Bond topped the Trojan scoring chart with nine points, while Trent Stamberger added six tallies.

Winnebago ended the contest with 10 three-point field goals.

Mendota finally scored some points, but Dixon scored more in a 76-49 victory over the Trojans on Feb. 22 at Dixon.

The first half wasn’t so good for the Trojans as they trailed 26-3 after the first period and 38-15 at the half. Mendota put 23 points on the board in the third frame as it hit four three-pointers in the quarter, including three from Romero.

Romero finished with 16 points to pace the Trojans (1-7), while Perez contributed 12 tallies.
