MENDOTA – The Mendota Trojans secured their second regional soccer championship in three years after cruising past Shabbona (Indian Creek), 5-0, in the Mendota Class 1A Regional on Oct. 13 at the MHS field.

The Trojans got things rolling when Eddie Perez blasted home a goal at 8:47. He took a nifty pass from Emiliano Arteaga in the center of the field and beat Indian Creek goaltender Logan Bend.

Perez was back at it eight minutes later when Arteaga set him up again for a goal to make it 2-0 Trojans. Mendota carried that lead to intermission.

The Trojans added three more goals in the second half while Indian Creek couldn’t get anything past Mendota goalies Joel Figueroa and Yanni Karahalios, who spelled Figueroa for a bit when he went to the bench with an injury.

Yahir Diaz tallied his first of two consecutive goals at the 45:30 mark on a solo shot that Bend whiffed on when he tried to make the stop.

Diaz made it 4-0 with another solo shot at 58:12.

Perez wrapped up the scoring with a hat trick goal at 77:33.

The Trojans advanced to the Chillicothe (IVC) Sectional where they will play Monmouth-Roseville at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. The other sectional contest will pit Earlville-Leland-Paw Paw against Peoria Christian at 5 p.m. The two winners will battle for the sectional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20.

Mendota added one more goal before halftime when Emiliano Arteaga scored off an assist by Josue Arteaga at the 31:04 mark.

Emiliano Arteaga continued the scoring barrage for the Trojans with a pair of unassisted goals early in the second half.
