Trojans come up empty of state track bids

GENOA – The Mendota Trojans saw their track season come to a close after competing in the Genoa-Kingston Class 2A Sectional on May 18 at Genoa.

Mendota’s top performances were two fifth-place finishes. Eli Otterbach took fifth in the high jump with a height of 5-9, while Eddy Sandoval was fifth in the 400-meter dash with a clocking of 53.14.

The Trojans also had competitors in several other events. Evan Stielow was 17th in the shot put (40-1), Cole Stremlau placed 21st in the discus (90-2), Jose Sandoval was 25th in the 3200-meter run (12:16.98) and 29th in the 1600-meter run (5:28.94), Chris Sandoval placed 23rd in the 100-meter dash (13.04), and Jonathan Patino finished 15th in the 800-meter run (2:12.8) and 27th in the 400-meter dash (1:05.42).

Mendota scored four teams points and finished 13th in the standings. Aurora Marmion Academy captured the sectional title with 96 points. Also among the top five teams were Dixon (91), Sterling (75), Burlington Central (64) and Sycamore (61). The next teams in line were Sandwich (56), Wheaton St. Francis (37), Rock Falls (28), Plano (15), Rochelle (13), Illinois Math & Science Academy (11) and Genoa-Kingston (6). Aurora Central Catholic (1), Wheaton Academy (0) and Stillman Valley (0) brought up the rear.
