Route 34 rivals Mendota and Earlville met for the first time since last year’s sectional championship match and the Trojans got revenge on the Raiders, 3-1, on Oct. 2 at the MHS field.

The Trojans held a 1-0 lead at the half, scoring on a penalty kick by Ivan Figueroa.

Mendota added two more goals in the second half by Emiliano Arteaga and Yahir Diaz, while Earlville only got one ball past Trojan goalie Yanni Karahalios, who ended with 13 saves.

“The boys have wanted this game since the end of last year,” said Mendota coach Nick Myers. “We were focused and came ready to play.”

Mendota traveled to Kewanee and had very little resistance from the Boilers in chalking up a 7-1 win on Oct. 3.

Diaz had a hat trick (three goals) to lead the charge. Emiliano Arteaga booted in a pair of goals, while Josue Arteaga and Johnathan Cortez each had one goal.

Diaz also notched a pair of assists and Arteaga had one.

Karahalios recorded three goalie saves and Manny Trejo had four.

“The guys continue to play well together and grow together as a team with post-season just around the corner,” noted Myers.
