A solid all-around performance by the Mendota Trojan golfers was something coach Brian Blumhorst was waiting for, and he got it against North Boone as the Trojans carded a scorching 158 to roll over a North Boone squad that turned in a 224 on Sept. 10 at the Mendota Golf Club.

Trojan golfers hitting their stride

A solid all-around performance by the Mendota Trojan golfers was something coach Brian Blumhorst was waiting for, and he got it against North Boone as the Trojans carded a scorching 158 to roll over a North Boone squad that turned in a 224 on Sept. 10 at the Mendota Golf Club.

“This was our best round of the year – this is where I was hoping to be,” noted Blumhorst.

Mendota’s Zeke Hessenberger posted the low score for the round with a 38. Teammate Ethan Hanaman was close behind with a 39, while Colton Scheppers had a 40 and Taylor Joyce recorded a 41. Jack Beetz (44) and Liam McGann (48) completed the lineup.

Mendota put together another strong effort in taking down Rochelle and Amboy in a triangular meet on Sept. 11 at Rochelle. The Trojans finished with a 163, while Rochelle checked in with a 185 and Amboy totaled 227.

Joyce led the way for the Trojans with a 37. Hessenberger, Hanaman and Scheppers each posted a 42, while McGann shot a 53 and Beetz ended with a 54.

Mendota also claimed the junior varsity competition by a wide margin. The Trojans had a 198 to down the host Hubs by 30 strokes. Amboy had a 250.

Freshmen Owen Ossman (47) and Clayton Buffington (49) led Mendota to victory. Logan Brandner and Mateo Escatel finished in the top four with 51s, while Noah DeLong (53) and Luke Ross (54) rounded out the scoring.

The Trojans remained undefeated on the season with a 161-179 triumph over Genoa-Kingston on Sept. 12 at the Mendota Golf Club. Mendota is 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big Northern Conference.

The entire Trojan lineup continued to shine with Hessenberger winning meet medalist honors with a 39. Hanaman was a close second with a 40, while Joyce and Scheppers each had 41s. Beetz (44) and McGann (47) finished out the scoring.

Mendota’s junior varsity squad has the same records as the varsity after downing Genoa-Kingston, 198-233.

Brandner was the medalist with a 45. Also competing for the Trojans were DeLong (49), Mateo Escatel (51), Cody Becket (51), Ross (53) and Kevin Lewis (58).

Mendota’s freshman-sophomore golfers formed Purple and Gold teams and the Purple won, 216-239. Buffington and Ossman each had a 51 to pace the Purple. Other scores included Landon Kreiser (55), Braden McPheeters (59) and Cayden Escatel (65). Drake Dennis and Jack Mikolasek led the Gold team with 59 apiece. Other Gold team members were Dylan Denault (60), Juan Delao (61) and Dominik Stamberger (62).

Mendota competed in the Oregon Freshman-Sophomore Tournament on Sept. 14.

The Trojan duo of Ossman and Buffington placed 12th overall with a score of 90. Also pairing up were Dennis and McPheeters (105) and Mikolasek-C. Escatel (122).

MHS’s team score was 195 for sixth place.
