MENDOTA – The Mendota City Council set Trick or Treat hours and approved several requests at its Sept. 7 regular meeting.
There will be two opportunities for children to Trick or Treat in Mendota this year. The first will be on Friday, Oct. 29 from 3-5 p.m. at participating Mendota businesses throughout the community. The second date will be on Halloween, Sunday, Oct. 31, from 5-7 p.m. Mendota residents who would like to participate in handing out treats to the children should turn on their porch light.
ALDERMANIC REPORTS
Alderman John Hessenberger presented a request from Aaron Elston to extend a privacy fence six feet past the neighbor’s house at the Elston residence, 400 11th Ave. The request was approved.
During Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick’s report, the council approved a request from Special Olympics to use Lake Mendota for its Polar Plunge event on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022.
Fitzpatrick informed the council of a petition filed by Jim Ambler and Mike Organ for the city to vacate a portion of Third Street between Eighth Avenue and West Seventh Avenue. The area is just north of Organ’s insurance office. A hearing will be conducted to consider the petition, and if approved, the property will revert half and half to the owners on each side.
OTHER ITEMS
A resident from the 1200 block of Jefferson Street asked for the city’s support in trying to control an issue of vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed through the alley behind her property. She said there are children playing and elderly people tending to their lawns and gardens that could be in harm’s way of a speeding vehicle. She informed the council that she has put in makeshift speed bumps to try to inhibit speeding vehicles. Mayor David Boelk said the council will take the matter under advisement.
The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, Sept. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
