Three Trojans land on all-conference golf team

The Mendota Trojan golfers concluded play on their home course with a 162-164 triumph over LaSalle-Peru on Oct. 1 at the Mendota Golf Club. The Trojans concluded match play with a 14-2 record.

Zeke Hessenberger was the meet medalist with a sizzling 37 to pace the Mendota victory. Ethan Hanaman and Taylor Joyce checked in at 40 and 41, respectively, followed by Colton Scheppers and Logan Brandner both with 44s and Jack Beetz with a 48.

“Another close win on senior night,” said MHS coach Brian Blumhorst. “Zeke was back to his normal low score after a week of struggles and everybody else just played their normal solid round by staying away from trouble.”

L-P nipped the Trojans in junior varsity action, 190-193. Mendota’s JV team finished the season with a 13-3 mark.

Clay Buffington checked in with the low score for the Trojans at 46. Liam McGann was next on the board with a 48 and Noah DeLong shot a 49. Mateo Escatel (50), Luke Ross (50) and Owen Ossman (56) completed the lineup.

Mendota’s freshman-sophomore squad wrapped up the season with a perfect 6-0 record after taking down L-P, 227-243.

Drake Dennis led the way for the Trojans with a low round of 51. Other Mendota competitors were Landon Kreiser (56), Braden McPheeters (59), Dominik Stamberger (61), Juan Delao (62) and Jack Mikolasek (68).

Three Trojan golfers earned Big Northern Conference all-conference honors after competing in the BNC Varsity Tournament on Oct. 3 at Timber Pointe in Poplar Grove.

Hanaman (83), Joyce (84) and Hessenberger (90) landed on the all-conference team after their performances in the conference meet. Hanaman finished third overall in the individual standings, Joyce was fifth and Hessenberger was 14th.

Completing the Mendota lineup were Beetz (94), Scheppers (101) and DeLong (110).

The Trojans finished third in the team standings with a 351, behind only champion Rock Falls (350) and Winnebago (350). Rockford Christian took fourth place with a 355, followed by Byron (366), Stillman Valley (370), Genoa-Kingston (387), Oregon (400), Rockford Lutheran (458), North Boone (474) and Dixon (482).

Winnebago’s Marcus Smith was the individual champion with a 69.

Mendota participated in the Big Northern Conference Junior Varsity Tournament on Oct. 5 at Swan Hills Golf Course in Belvidere. The Trojans were seventh out of eight in the team standings.

McGann paced the Trojans with a 49. Buffington was next on the card with a 51, followed by Ossman and Kreiser both with 53s. Dennis (57) and McPheeters (62) completed the lineup.
