COLUMBIA, Mo. - Thomas J. Guilfoyle, 71, of Columbia, Mo. died April 30, 2017 at his home.
Tom was born Jan. 13, 1946 in Mendota to Lawrence and Marguerite Guilfoyle. He married Gretchen Hagen in 1980.
Survivors include his wife of Columbia; one sister, Nancy (David) Cusick of Barron, Wis.; one brother, Mike (Barb) Guilfoyle of Mendota; two nieces, Bridget Cusick and Kathleen Stevenson; two nephews, Patrick Cusick and Kristopher Guilfoyle; and his long time friend, Junior the cat.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Tom grew up in Mendota attending Holy Cross School and Mendota High School. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and went on to get his Master’s degree and PhD in biochemistry from the University of Illinois. He served two years in the U.S. Army. Tom taught biochemistry at the University of Minnesota before joining the faculty at the University of Missouri in Columbia. He and Gretchen were both professors and worked in the same department at University of Missouri where they received many awards including the Charles Reid Barnes Life Membership Award from the American Society of Plant Biologists for their work on gene research in plants. He enjoyed cooking and was a wine connoisseur.
