UTICA – Starved Rock Lodge will host its third annual Winter MegaHike on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21. To participate in this event, you must have some sort of additional traction for your footwear, such as Yak-trax or Katoohlas. The terrain is expected to be extremely icy. You will board a trolley with a pair of guides and be taken to the east end of the park where you will begin your trek. Hikes will leave the Lodge at 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. both days. You will hike a total of 13.4 miles and see all 18 canyons, where some of them will have frozen waterfalls. You will also go to six overlooks where you will have a good possibility to see bald eagles. Expected time for lunch is 1-1:30 p.m., with a finish time approximately 4:30-5 p.m. Cost is $37 per person. Included is trolley transportation, guides, boxed lunch and a specially designed long sleeved shirt. If you arrive without the proper footwear, you will not be allowed to hike with the group.
