Spikers top Indian Creek, go winless in tournament

Mendota rolled to a 25-13, 25-19 victory over Indian Creek in varsity volleyball action on Sept. 4 at Shabbona.

Jaelyn Fitzgerald and Amellia Bromenschenkel controlled the net with five kills apiece. They were set up by Ella Massey, who delivered 15 assists. Bromenschenkel and Jenna O’Donnell recorded six and five digs, respectively, while Bromenschenkel, O’Donnell and Anna Bokus had two aces apiece.

Indian Creek needed three sets to top the Mendota sophomore squad, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19.

The freshman match went to Mendota over Indian Creek.

The Spikers struggled in the two-day Oregon Tournament, dropping all five matches they played.

Mendota competed in two matches on Sept. 6. The Spikers opened with a 21-25, 25-21, 17-19 setback to Forreston and then fell by a 17-25, 15-25 count to Durand.

On Sept. 7, the Spikers were beaten by Dakota (19-25, 19-25), Keith Country Day (25-8, 17-25, 13-15) and Erie-Prophetstown (19-25, 22-25).

Mendota statistical leaders for the tournament were O’Donnell with 43 digs, Massey with 75 assists, Fitzgerald with 23 kills, Fitzgerald and Bromenschenkel with nine blocks each, and Massey with eight aces. Bromenschenkel also collected 35 digs and 21 kills, Massey had 34 digs and Bokus provided six aces.

Mendota has a 2-5 record on the season.
