Spikers take down 3 foes; place 9th in Oregon Tourney

Mendota made short work of Bureau Valley, 25-16, 25-14, in varsity volleyball action on Aug. 31 at the Mendota gym.

Marah Setchell and Maya Martin topped the kill chart with four apiece, while Kya Delao had 12 digs, Lauren Martin collected four ace serves and Katie Jenner recorded five assists.

The Spikers and LaSalle-Peru hooked up in a three-set thriller that went to Mendota, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, on Sept. 1 at L-P.

Setchell and Reanna Brant were a force at the net for the Spikers with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Jenner (17 assists) and Delao (16 assists) jumpstarted the offense, while Paige Manning delivered five ace serves and Lauren Martin added four. Martin starred on defense with 26 digs and Manning helped out with 11.

Mendota had an easy time in dispatching St. Bede, 25-10, 25-21, on Sept. 2 at Peru. The Spikers improved their record to 2-0 in Three Rivers Conference play.

Brant and Meredith McConville paced the team on offense with six kills apiece, while Delao got things started with 10 assists. Elly Buettner contributed a pair of ace serves and Lauren Martin produced 10 digs.

The Spikers finished in ninth place out of 16 teams in the Oregon Tournament on Sept. 3-4.

Mendota split a pair of matches on Friday, defeating Forreston 25-23, 24-26, 15-12 and losing to Erie-Prophetstown, 23-25, 25-14, 12-15.

Against Forreston, Brant had seven kills, McConville had three blocks, Lauren Martin had 25 digs and Jenner had 10 assists. Against E-P, Lauren Martin recorded five aces and 20 digs, McConville hammered seven kills and Delao posted 11 assists.

On Saturday, the Spikers lost their opening match to Dakota, 25-22, 25-13, before winning their final two against former Big Northern Conference foes Stillman Valley and Oregon. Mendota was an 18-25, 25-22, 15-5 winner over Stillman Valley and took down the Hawks, 25-13, 21-25, 15-11.

Against Dakota, Setchell led in kills with five, Lauren Martin and Manning picked up 20 and 14 digs, respectively, and Delao had eight assists. Leading the attack against Stillman Valley were Maya Martin and Brant with three kills apiece, McConville with five blocks and Lauren Martin with 24 digs. In the victory over Oregon, Setchell delivered 10 kills and three blocks, Lauren Martin dug up 34 serves, and Jenner and Madelyn Becker had 11 assists apiece.

The Spikers have an 8-2 season record.
