St. Bede spoiled the season-opener for the Mendota volleyball team, taking out the Spikers in three sets 25-23, 18-25, 25-15 on Aug. 21 at the MHS gym.

Myah Boelk had a strong all-around match for the Spikers, leading the team with 13 service points and tying Larkin O’Donnell with 10 digs. Abby Phalen topped the club with 11 kills and Boelk added nine. Ella Massey delivered 28 assists and Amellia Bromenschenkel supplied two blocks.

Mendota won the sophomore match 25-10, 25-21.

In freshman “A” action, St. Bede was a 25-16, 16-25, 15-13 winner, while Mendota claimed the “B” match 25-14, 25-14.

The Spikers evened up their record at 1-1 with a thrilling 23-25, 25-23, 25-14 triumph at Sandwich on Aug. 23.

Phalen had an excellent all-around match for Mendota, leading the team with 16 service points and contributing 15 kills and 13 digs. Boelk led the charge at the net with 16 kills, while Massey piled up 38 assists and Larkin O’Donnell came up with 13 digs. Peyton Baird was also a force at the net with eight kills and three blocks.

Mendota’s sophomores took down Sandwich, 28-26, 25-18, while the freshman Spikers made it a clean sweep on the night with a 25-15, 25-15 triumph.
