Spikers on 7-match win streak

The Mendota Spikers made short work of Rockford Christian, cruising in straight sets 25-8, 25-18, in Big Northern Conference varsity volleyball action on Sept. 18 at the MHS gym.

Abby Phalen was dominant at the service line for the Spikers, picking up 22 service points. She also contributed five kills and five digs. Peyton Baird topped the team with eight kills and added three blocks, while Jaelyn Fitzgerald had five kills and three blocks. Also leading the attack were Ella Massey (20 assists), Larkin O’Donnell (five digs) and Amellia Bromenschenkel (four blocks).

Mendota was also victorious in the underclass matches, with the sophomores posting a 25-10 25-21 victory and the freshmen claiming a 25-23, 25-17 win.

The Spikers posted their second straight conference win with a 25-23, 25-17 verdict at Winnebago on Sept. 20. Mendota is 2-1 in the BNC.

Myah Boelk had a strong performance with eight kills 10 service points and eight digs. Phalen had the hot hand at the net with 13 kills, while Massey delivered 28 assists and Larkin O’Donnell produced 14 digs.

Mendota won the sophomore match 25-23, 25-15.

The Spiker teams made it a clean sweep as the freshmen picked up a 25-19, 25-17 victory.

Mendota dominated play against five opponents to claim first place in the 16-team Reed-Custer Tournament on Sept. 22.

The Spikers began with a 21-14, 21-17 win over Grant Park. Leading the attack were Phalen with eight kills, Baird and Boelk with four service points apiece, Massey with 20 assists and Larkin O’Donnell with five digs.

Mendota cruised past Kankakee Bishop McNamara, 21-8, 21-16. Boelk and Fitzgerald each had six kills, Massey accumulated 18 assists, Phalen collected nine service points and Larkin O’Donnell had eight digs.

Mendota took out the host team in quick fashion, 21-12, 21-13. Topping the stat chart were Boelk (11 kills), Massey (29 assists), Larkin O’Donnell and Jenna O’Donnell (six service points) and Phalen (11 digs).

The Spikers posted a 25-17, 25-18 triumph over Romeoville. Boelk paced the squad with 10 kills and seven service points. Other top contributors were Massey with 24 assists, Larkin O’Donnell with eight digs and Fitzgerald with three blocks.

Mendota wrapped up the tournament championship with a 25-17, 25-14 decision over St. Bede. Boelk and Fitzgerald tied with nine kills apiece, while Massey generated 24 assists, Larkin O’Donnell had 16 service points and Phalen lifted 11 digs.

The Spikers improved their record to 16-4.
