Mendota’s power game and defense proved to be too much for Genoa-Kingston to handle as it rolled to a 20-13, 25-20 victory in Big Northern Conference volleyball action on Oct. 9 at the MHS gym.
The Spikers were dominant at the net, with Abby Phalen and Myak Boelk posting nine and eight kills, respectively. Jaelyn Fitzgerald led the team with five blocks, while Ella Massey had three blocks, and Boelk, Peyton Baird and Anna Bokus collected two apiece. Massey also contributed a team-leading 20 assists and Larkin O’Donnell had 11 digs.
Mendota’s sophomores won by identical 25-16, 25-16 scores, while the freshman Spikers cruised to a 25-21, 25-5 triumph.
The Spikers continued to dominate conference opponents with a 25-17, 25-17 triumph over North Boone on Oct. 11 at Poplar Grove. Mendota improved to 7-1 in BNC outings.
Phalen had a solid effort with six kills, nine service points and 11 digs, while Baird provided six kills, seven service points and two blocks. Boelk topped the team with eight kills, Massey had 24 assists and Larkin O’Donnell picked up 15 digs.
Mendota’s sophomore and freshman squads were no match for North Boone as the sophomores won 25-9, 25-12 and the freshmen were victorious 25-9, 25-10.
