Spikers go 3-2 in tournament

The Mendota Spikers began Three Rivers Conference play with a 25-19, 18-25, 18-25 setback to Bureau Valley on Aug. 29 at the MHS gym.

Laylie Denault provided six kills, 11 digs and two aces for Mendota. Grace Wasmer picked up five kills and two blocks, while Madelyn Becker accounted for 10 assists, five digs and three kills. Lilly Leifheit led the squad with 21 digs and Ana Ramirez was tops with five aces, while also collected 11 digs.

Bureau Valley claimed the sophomore match, 25-9, 16-25, 25-19, while Mendota needed just two sets to capture the freshman match, 25-17, 25-22.

Mendota competed in the two-day Oregon Tournament and finished with three wins and two losses.

On Sept. 1, the Spikers lost to Oregon in two sets and defeated South Beloit in two sets.

On Sept. 2, Mendota lost to Orangeville in three sets and then triumphed over Erie-Prophetstown in three sets and Pearl City in two sets.

The Spikers have a 4-4 season record.
