Spikers continue to fall on hard times

Oregon came back from a one-set deficit to defeat the Mendota Spikers 21-25, 25-12, 25-11 in a Big Northern Conference volleyball match on Sept. 19 at Oregon.

Jaelyn Fitzgerald had seven kills and two blocks to lead the net attack for Mendota, while Abby Phalen added six kills. Reiss Buettner topped the team with nine assists and eight service points, and Larkin O’Donnell led with nine digs.

The Spikers remained winless in the conference after being handled by Rockford Lutheran, 25-8, 25-18, on Sept. 21 at the MHS gym. Mendota dropped to 0-4 in league contests.

Alex Barrera and Myah Boelk had three kills apiece to lead the squad. Boelk also led with five digs, while Phalen supplied four service points and Ella Massey picked up seven assists.

Mendota had two ties and two losses in the Reed-Custer Tournament on Sept. 23.

The Spikers started the day by tying Morris, 21-14, 20-21. Pacing the attack were Fitzgerald (eight kills), Buettner (10 assists), Phalen (nine points) and Boelk (eight digs).

Mendota also tied Seneca, losing the first set 21-19 and cruising in the second set, 21-4. Barrera, Fitzgerald and Peyton Baird has three kills apiece for the Spikers. Other top performers were Boelk (11 points), Buettner (eight assists), Phalen (seven digs) and Fitzgerald (three blocks).

The Spikers suffered a 21-9, 21-20 setback to St. Bede. Topping the club were Barrera (five kills), Buettner (nine assists), Boelk (four points) and O’Donnell (four digs).

Mendota (3-16-2) concluded the tournament with a 25-20, 26-24 loss to Romeoville. Buettner had 13 assists, 11 points and seven digs, while Fitzgerald posted seven kills.
