OREGON – The Mendota Spikers won four of five matches and finished in fifth place in the 16-team Oregon Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.
Mendota opened play with two wins on Friday. The first victory was over Pearl City, 25-20, 25-13. The Spikers had a balanced attack with Peyton Baird leading the team with eight kills and Abby Phalen contributing seven. Ella Massey supplied 18 assists and four blocks, while Jenna O’Donnell had nine service points, Larkin O’Donnell picked up 10 digs and Amellia Bromenschenkel posted five blocks.
Mendota needed just two sets to take down Keith Country Day, 25-18, 25-20. Phalen led the way with nine service points, 12 digs and seven blocks. Baird drilled seven kills and had six blocks, while Massey accumulated 14 assists.
To begin day two, Eastland handed the Spikers their only loss of the tournament, 25-21, 19-25, 15-9. Phalen and Baird were strong at the net with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Baird led the squad with nine service points, Larkin O’Donnell had 11 digs and Bromenschenkel and Bianca Espinoza each had three blocks.
Mendota needed three sets to knock off Forreston, 25-16, 11-25, 15-10. Statistical leaders for the Spikers were Baird with 13 kills, Phalen with 11 service points, Massey with 28 assists and Larkin O’Donnell with 13 digs.
The Spikers (5-2) recorded a 25-21, 25-22 triumph over Lena-Winslow. Myak Boelk topped the team with nine kills, while Baird recorded eight. Massey sparked the offense with 28 assists, Phalen supplied six service points and Larkin O’Donnell contributed 13 digs.
Phalen was named to the all-tournament team.
