MENDOTA – It was a successful start to the new season for the Mendota Spikers as they posted a thrilling 25-21, 21-25, 26-24 victory over Sandwich on Aug. 29 at the MHS gym. First-year coach Hallie Monroe got the victory in her first match on the Spiker bench.
After taking the first set, it looked like the Spikers were going to close things out in two sets, but Sandwich rallied late to send the match to the deciding set. In the third set, the contest went back and forth before Mendota pulled out the two-point victory.
Lauren Martin led at the service line with 10 points, including a pair of aces. Anna Bokus collected seven points and two aces, while Ella Massey and Madi Mikolasek each had five points. Amellia Bromenschenkel and Jaelyn Fitzgerald were strong at the net with 13 and eight kills, respectively. Massey set the table with 29 assists, while Jenna O’Donnell picked up 10 digs.
Mendota claimed a 25-16, 25-13 win in the sophomore match.
Sandwich avoided getting swept with a two-set victory over Mendota in freshman competition.
