Sophomore cagers lose two league games; top Earlville

Bureau Valley downed Mendota, 50-36, in Three Rivers Conference sophomore boys’ basketball action on Jan. 18 at Manlius.

After leading 10-7 at the end of one period, the Trojans surrendered the lead in the second quarter and trailed, 23-20, at intermission. The home team then outscored Mendota, 27-16, in the second half.

Logan Dewey led the way for the Trojans with 11 points, followed by Owen Aughenbaugh with seven, Ryan Stevenson with six and Cale Strouss with five.

Mendota hung with Kewanee for three quarters before the Boilers pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 46-31 conference win on Jan. 21 at Kewanee.

The Trojans were down six (16-10) after the opening stanza, then trailed by just four points at the half (22-18) and after three periods (35-21). But Mendota failed to score in the fourth frame while Kewanee put up 11 points to preserve the victory.

Strouss and Jace Baird both pumped in 11 points for the Trojans, while Dewey contributed seven points.

A strong second half propelled Rock Falls over the Trojans, 56-34, on Jan. 22 at Rock Falls.

The two teams played to a 12-12 tie after the first eight minutes. Rock Falls went up by two (21-19) at the break, and then the home team outscored Mendota, 19-2, in the third period to pull away for the win.

Baird topped the scoring column for the Trojans with nine points, while Strouss provided six tallies.

Mendota toppled Earlville, 39-24, on Jan. 24 at the MHS gym.

The Trojans sprinted out to a 12-1 lead after the first period and owned an 18-8 halftime advantage.

Aughenbaugh led the charge with 13 points and Dewey supplied eight markers. Easton Fruit (10) and Trenton Fruit (8) paced Earlville.
