Sophomore cagers claim two wins in three games

A monster fourth quarter propelled the Mendota sophomores to a 44-28 triumph over Sterling Newman in a Three Rivers Conference encounter on Jan. 10 at the MHS gym.

The Trojans managed just one point in the first quarter and found themselves down 8-1 heading to the second. Newman maintained its lead and took a 17-13 halftime advantage, and then the Comets stretched the margin to seven (26-19) entering the final frame. But the game took a dramatic turn in the fourth quarter when the Trojans ripped the net for 25 points while holding Newman to just a single bucket to win going away.

Aden Tillman and Domenic Richey led the attack with 12 points apiece, followed by Dane Doyle with 10 tallies and Braiden Freeman with seven.


Mendota and Rock Falls hooked up in a tight contest that went to the Trojans, 46-39, in sophomore boys’ nonconference basketball action on Jan. 13 at the MHS gym.

After trailing 16-14 at the end of one period, the Trojans held Rock Falls to seven points in the second quarter to take a 29-23 halftime lead. The visitors cut the deficit in half (34-31) heading to the fourth, before Mendota pulled away for the victory.

Tillman hit six of six free throws in the fourth frame and finished with 16 points. Doyle was next with 11 points, while Cam Kelly contributed 10 tallies.

Mendota’s freshmen bested Rock Falls, 49-39. Ramiro Palacios paced the attack with 23 points, followed by Johan Cortez and Angel Orozco with nine markers apiece.


Offense was hard to come by for both teams in a 33-22 Ottawa victory over the Mendota sophomores in nonconference play on Jan. 14 at Ottawa.

Tillman topped Trojan scorers with eight points.

Mendota’s overall record is 11-8.
